The Most Reverend George Cleophus Parris was born on May 18, 1937, to James and Eudalie Parris in the parish of St. Joseph on the beautiful Island of Barbados, along with three brothers and four sisters. He was the devoted and loving husband of (Evangelist) Lady Joan Parris for 45 years and 6 months.
Bishop Parris attended Clifton Hill Boys School in Barbados. After migrating to the United States, he continued his education, graduating from Prospect High School and Brooklyn Technical Institute with a degree in Electrical Engineering. In his continued pursuit of academic and spiritual excellence, he received a Certificate in Evangelism, an Associate Degree in Biblical Studies from Bethel Bible Institute, a Master of Theology, and a Doctor of Theology from the C International Theological Seminary.
As a child, he enjoyed the benefits of spiritual nurturing from his grandmother Sister Mascoll, who read the bible to him and his siblings, thus laying the spiritual foundation by instilling Godly values in his young life. He accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior at the age of seventeen.
Bishop Parris was a faithful Good Tidings Gospel Hall member in Brooklyn, New York. While at Good Tidings, he met Brother Gerson Marshall, and two of them preached the gospel at numerous churches. The two would report their ministerial activities to the Good Tidings elders but receive little encouragement for all their zeal.
In 1976, Brother Marshall started a church in East Flatbush. With only seven believers, he established the Ebenezer Missionary Chapel, and Brother Parris was one of the first Deacons to be ordained. As the church grew, Deacon Parris continued to serve faithfully at Ebenezer.
In 1981, while driving along Church Avenue, the Lord told him to establish a church. He heeded the Lord’s voice, and Hebron Evangelical Church was started at his home. Shortly after establishing Hebron Evangelical Church, he relinquished the pastorship to Reverend Dexter Parke, who was an Assistant Pastor at Ebenezer Missionary Chapel, and he served as Deacon.
In 1987, he was ordained a Minister. When Rev. Parke resigned as Pastor of Hebron Evangelical Church, he was unanimously voted in as Pastor. Due to the rapid membership growth, the church moved to 471 Remsen Avenue and later to its present location at 741 Remsen Avenue, which was a furniture store. Being a jack of all trades and a professional electrician, Pastor Parris could work on almost every area of the building himself.
With a deep desire for ministry work, he looked forward to the day of retirement from the New York City Transit Authority so that he would be able to work full-time in ministry. After retiring, he wanted to relocate to Florida, but he wanted to see the church rooted and grounded, so he changed his mind. In 1996, he again was led by the Lord with his love and passion for ministry, and by the request of a few saints, he started another church for the Lord in Ocala, Florida, and so, another Hebron Evangelical Church was born. Dr. Parris traveled between both churches, giving all his time, energy, and finances to further the gospel. He also had affiliations and assisted two churches, one in Trinidad and the other in Grenada. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, reading, baking, and singing.
Bishop Parris was an anointed and dedicated servant of God operating in the five-fold ministry. He passionately advocated for souls and believed in winning the lost at any cost. His desire was to do God’s will and preach the Word, which he shared in his messages of faith, hope, and deliverance.
Bishop George Cleophus Parris was consecrated a Prince in the Lord’s Church and installed as the Presiding Bishop of Hebron Evangelical Fellowship Ministries on November 5, 2006, by Bishop Eric Rinald Figueroa, Sr., Archbishop Metropolitan New Life Covenant and Presiding Bishop of New Life Covenant Fellowship, and an Ecumenical College of Bishops.
Leave to celebrate his life and legacy his devoted wife (Evangelist), Lady Dr Joan Parris, daughter Dr. Andrea Parris, brother Bishop Alonzo Parris, sister Muriel Hurdle, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, and spiritual sons and daughters. Preceded him in death were his parents, Pastor James and Eudalie Parris, and siblings Rita Alleyne, Randolph Parris, Luther Parris, Winifred Bowen, and Elise Marshall.
Bishop Parris says, like the psalmist David, “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will Y seek after; that may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple.” – Psalms 27:4.
May his soul rest in perfect peace
Lovingly submitted by the family.
